About the instructor
Dick Jones
A lifetime spent competing, teaching, coaching—and finding better ways to help shooters improve.

Dick Jones · Gun writer
Decades of shooting knowledge in print.
Dick has written hundreds of national-level training, technique, and firearm-review articles. His work has appeared in leading shooting publications and has connected him with many of the best shooters in the world.
Dick Jones has been competing, teaching, and coaching since 1976. He first became a compensated instructor in 1980, teaching Adult Continuing Education at Davidson County Community College.
His shooting career spans shotgun, rifle, and pistol competition. He is a Distinguished Rifleman and former High Master, and he has earned awards in nearly every shooting discipline as well as recognition for shooting and coaching at the national level.
Dick is an NRA Certified Rifle, Pistol, and Shotgun Instructor and a certified Range Safety Officer. Over the years, he has also trained instructors—but he believes certification alone does not make someone an effective teacher.
“An effective instructor must be able to diagnose a shooter’s problems and clearly communicate how to resolve them.”
That ability to observe, diagnose, and explain is central to Dick’s approach. He considers making better shooters his life’s work, and the challenge of helping each person improve is constantly on his mind.
His writing career has allowed him to establish relationships with many of the world’s best shooters. Through those experiences, he has continued refining his ability to transfer proven skillsets to his clients. He is proud of the results—and confident enough to tell every client that if they do not feel they learned, he will give them their money back.
A note from Dick
Welcome to Lewis Creek
We furnish training in pistol, rifle, and shotgun, as well as range time for practice with groups and individuals. All training and range time is scheduled by appointment, and your party is the only party on the range.
Because I’m working with only one party, I can allow activities other ranges can’t. Provided you have the necessary skills, you can draw from a holster, shoot rapid fire, shoot steel targets, and even do move-and-shoot exercises.
I believe responsible firearms ownership begins with proper training. Visitors to Lewis Creek Shooting School have given us outstanding reviews on Google. I bring over 45 years of experience training adult and youth shooters, with instruction tailored to each person’s experience and goals. I’ve written hundreds of national-level training and review articles.
I train everyone from competitive shooters, law enforcement, military personnel, and security contractors to an 80-year-old grandmother with her first gun. I’ve trained people from every continent except Antarctica.
Whether you’re a first-time gun owner or you’ve been shooting for years and want to refine your skills, if I don’t help you shoot better, say so and the session is free.
I look forward to seeing you on the range,
Dick Jones
